John Michael Del Colle

John Michael Del Colle, 93, passed away on February 1, 2022, at his home in the Community of Rarity Bay, Vonore, Tennessee. John was born in Jersey City, NJ and grew up and lived in Lodi, NJ prior to moves to Morris County, NJ and, ultimately, to Vonore, TN.

John served in the Navy, where he obtained extensive training in the field of electronics. He obtained both his BS and Master’s Degrees in Electrical Engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University. John was employed and retired from Lucent Technologies (formerly AT&T Bell Laboratories) in Whippany, NJ. He was a member of the team of engineers that developed the technology for cellular phones—a highlight of his career. He was a true pioneer, considering the current worldwide use and reliance on cell phone technology.

John spent his last sixteen years in Rarity Bay, where he enjoyed fishing and boating, and various sports activities. He was a lifelong sportsman and athlete. Competing in the Tennessee Senior Olympics beginning at age 85 in Discus, Shot Put, High Jump, Long Jump and Javelin, he broke both state and regional records and won 45 medals—35 gold and 10 silver.

John was a man whose independently-learned accomplishments were many and varied—art, photography, landscape design and construction, gardening, carpentry, masonry, painting. He was also an excellent cook, specializing in Italian cuisine.

John is survived by his daughter Karen Del Colle and husband Mark Rubinsky and by his son-in-law Dan Donohue and granddaughter Nicole Donohue. His beloved daughter Janice Del Colle predeceased him. He is also survived by his sisters Marie Del Colle Nardino (partner William Radzelovage); Sandra Del Colle Lucero (husband Robert Lucero); niece Maureen Hoffman Greiner (husband Gary Greiner), nephew Robert J. Nardino (wife Mary Patricia Agger Nardino); nephew Christopher Slocombe; and by his loving great-nephews and nieces.

John was predeceased by his parents John A. Del Colle and Mary Piscotta Del Colle; his beloved sisters Nora Del Colle and Dolores Del Colle Hoffman; and his niece and nephews Kathleen Hoffman Rosol, Robert Hoffman, Michael P. Nardino.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, May 21, at 11:30 am, at St. Joseph’s RC Church, Lodi, NJ.
